The objective of this study is to determine the effects of 12 weeks of lavender aromatherapy on self-reported sleep and heart rate variability (HRV) in the midlife women with insomnia. The experimental group ( ) received lavender inhalation, 20 min each time, twice per week, for 12 weeks, with a total of 24 times.Significant decrease in mean heart rate (HR) and increases in SDNN (standard deviation of the normal-to-normal (NN) intervals), RMSDD (square root of the mean squared differences of successive NN intervals), and HF (high frequency) of spectral powers analysis after lavender inhalation were observed in the 4th and 12th weeks of aromatherapy. The total CPSQI score of study subjects was significantly decreased in the experimental group ( ), while no significant difference was observed across the same time period ( ) in the control group. The study demonstrated that lavender inhalation may have a persistent short-term effect on HRV with an increase in parasympathetic modulation.Short-term inhalation of lavender oil has been used as a sleep aid [6].It was concluded that lavender may provide a mild sedation to promote sleep [7, 8].To examine whether the odor is required for lavender to exert its anxiolytic effects, Bradley and colleagues tested the efficacy of lavender administered orally. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of lavender aromatherapy on HRV before and after 12 weeks of treatment in midlife women with insomnia.Subjects.Participants in the aromatherapy arm received a 12-week course of twice a week with a total of 24 times.Control studies without aromatherapy were performed in an environment as described above in the experimental group.HRV measurement was performed at the baseline measurement, in the 4th and after the 12th weeks of follow-up period in both experimental and control groups. In the experimental group, HRV measurements were performed before and 10 min after aromatherapy in the 4th and 12th weeks of the treatment.Overall, VLF, HF, and HFnu represent parasympathetic activity; LF and LFnu represent both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity.Among the randomized participants, 7 (10.4%) did not complete the study. In the 4th week, there were significant differences in mean HR, SDNN, RMSSD, and HF before and after aromatherapy in the experimental group ( ).The median VLF level in experimental group was significantly higher than those in the control group. All the other HRV measurements, however, did not show significant difference between the lavender aromatherapy and control group. The result indicates that statistically significant decreases in the total score before and after treatment were observed in the experimental group ( ).However, in the control group, no significant difference was observed across the same time period ( ).When the Mann-Whitney -test was used to compare the effect of change in the CPSQI total score before treatment between both groups, the data showed a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups (−4.90 versus −0.26, ).We found a significant decrease in mean HR and increases in time domain analysis HRV parameters (SDNN, RMSDD) after 20 min of lavender inhalation. The beneficial effect of HRV, however, is not shown in the resting measurements after 4 and 12 weeks of lavender aromatherapy in comparison with the control group. With the addition of essential oil of lavender, there were positive effects on HRV 10 min after the footbath was complete [20].Our result confirmed the above observation of the consistently short-term effect of lavender inhalation on the modulation of HRV.Our data did not support the long-term effect of lavender on the modulation of HRV; thus, the hypothesis that chronic application of lavender aromatherapy would improve autonomic modulations could not be proved. The physiological hyperarousal has been evidenced by increased LF and decreased HF across all sleep stages; both measures reflect elevated sympathetic nervous system activity [24, 25].We demonstrated that lavender aromatherapy decreases HR and increases HF, SDNN, and RMSSD during a period of 30 min.It might suggest that increases in HRV are an indication that lavender interacted with the parasympathetic nervous system to modulate anxiety and aid in improving self-reported sleep quality.Whether the effect of increasing HRV from lavender aromatherapy is through the psychological process or direct pharmacological effect could not be determined from this study. The lack of chronic effect on the modulation of HRV as shown from our data indicates that further investigation needs to be conducted on the interaction of psychological with physiological mechanisms. After 12 weeks of lavender aromatherapy, midlife women with insomnia have improvement in the quality of their sleep. .

Lavender Essential Oil: Benefits, Side Effects, Dosage, and

Distilled from the plant Lavandula angustifolia, the oil promotes relaxation and believed to treat anxiety, fungal infections, allergies, depression, insomnia, eczema, nausea, and menstrual cramps. It is purported to have anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antidepressant, antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, as well as antispasmodic, analgesic, detoxifying, hypotensive, and sedative effects..While there's currently a lack of large-scale clinical trials testing lavender's effects on people with anxiety, a number of studies show that the oil may offer some anti-anxiety benefits.A more recent review of the literature found 5 studies (2010, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016) showed benefits ins participants with moderate to severe anxiety.Several studies have shown lavender essential oil may help promote sleep and fight insomnia. The study of 79 students with self-reported sleep problems also found inhaling lavender at bedtime improved daytime energy and vibrancy..Because consuming lavender essential oil can have toxic effects, this remedy should not be ingested unless under the supervision of a medical professional.According to the principles of aromatherapy, breathing in the scent of lavender essential oil or applying lavender essential oil to the skin transmits messages to the limbic system, a brain region known to influence the nervous system and help regulate emotion. When buying pure lavender essential oil, check the label for its Latin name, Lavandula angustifolia.A 2016 study on mice showed that a diluted topically applied lavender essential oil did lead to dramatic hair growth. An earlier study (1998) looked at people with alopecia areata showed improvement in hair growth with a topically applied combination of lavender, thyme, rosemary and cedarwood. .

Effect of Lavender Aromatherapy on Acute-Stressed Horses

Methods to reduce the effects of acute stress could benefit the equine industry; therefore, the objective of this experiment was to determine whether aromatherapy would hasten the recovery time in acute-stressed horses. These results demonstrate that lavender aromatherapy can significantly decrease HR after an acute stress response and signal a shift from the sympathetic nervous control from the parasympathetic system. .

Effect of lavender aromatherapy on menopause hot flushing: A

Vasomotor flushing is considered to be the main symptom and the most common problem of menopause.During a hot flush, hormone production is stopped in the ovaries, which decreases the level of estrogen in the blood circulation, and increases the activity and stimulation of serotonin receivers (5-HIAA) in the hypothalamus. This problem is likely caused by hypothalamic changes of neurotransmitters that enhance autonomic and nerve activities.7 The primary treatment for flushing is hormone therapy, which can reduce it by 70–80%.8 However, due to particular side effects of hormone replacement therapy, including an elevated risk of breast cancer, thrombophlebitis, hypertension, vaginal bleeding, and gall bladder disease, fewer patients have undertaken hormone therapy and more have considered nonhormonal therapies.9 In the past decade, the use of nonhormonal cures such as nutrition, sport, aromatherapy, homeotherapy, relaxation, and herbal medicine has increased significantly for reducing menopause symptoms.10 It is believed that every factor causing the secretion of serotonin and endorphin, and reduction of neurepinepherin also decreases hot flushing.11.In general, lynalilacetate has been defined as a pain reliever.18 Other therapeutic effects of lavender have also been reported; for example, a blinded clinical trial intended to assess the effect of lavender in treating anxiety in people with dementia showed substantial improvement in the anxiety levels of those treated by aromatherapy.19 The effect of lavender on insomnia was also studied in the form of a crossover blinded randomized trial, where the prescription of lavender caused moderate improvement in patients’ symptoms.20 Issues related to menopause are a research priority in Iran, and prevention of undesired consequences is the responsibility of midwives.Flushing is one of the most common and painful problems of women during menopause.Among complementary medicines, lavender has the fewest side effects and is both accepted by and useful for women.21 As we could not find any research studying the effect of lavender on flushing in Iranian women, this research aimed to determine the effect of lavender aromatherapy on menopausal flushing. At first, a demographic questionnaire was completed through face-to-face interviews for both groups; after necessary explanation, the participants were asked to record their flushing numbers daily for a week and report the results to a research assistant. Then, patients were administered lavender or placebo aromatherapy twice a week for 20 minutes for a 12-week period for each group.Subsequently, members of each group were again asked to write their flushing numbers daily for 1 week, and provide the results to a research assistant. The current research was conducted on 100 menopausal women (50 in each group) who suffered from flushing symptoms.Table 1: Comparison of the demographic characteristics of the participants in intervention and control groups.Table 3: Comparison of flushing numbers between the two groups before and after intervention. The current research results suggested that lavender aromatherapy reduced flushing numbers during menopause. It is believed that odors are caused by aromas activating olfactory nerve cells, resulting in limbic system stimulation.Abbaspour et al29 also found soya to be effective in decreasing the intensity and number of daily flushing in menopausal women.Regarding the effect of stress on rising menopause flushing, it can be suggested that women suffering from flushing should smell lavender essence, which is a simple, noninvasive, safe, and effective method of therapy. .

Lavender: Health benefits and uses

Research suggests that it may be useful for treating anxiety, insomnia, depression, and restlessness.A study published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology found that lavender oil could be effective in combating antifungal-resistant infections. In the study, the essential oils distilled from the Lavandula genus of the lavender plant seemed to work by destroying the membranes of fungal cells.A study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine compared the effects of several treatments for wound healing. The study authors noted that wounds closed faster in the TENS and lavender oil groups than the control groups. In a more recent study , researchers found that applying lavender oil to the backs of mice helped to promote hair growth over the course of 4 weeks.Share on Pinterest Lavender scents have been shown to reduce anxiety before a dental appointment.Researchers have also found that lavender scent may help anxious dental patients.Post-tonsillectomy pain in children.Lavender oil has been shown to reduce the amount of painkilling medicine required after a tonsillectomy. Many women of reproductive age experience a range of symptoms in the premenstrual phase, commonly known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS).The study concluded that lavender aromatherapy could alleviate premenstrual emotional symptoms.menstrual pain.cancer-related pain. However, the authors highlighted that “repeated studies are needed to confirm effective proportions of lavender oil and carrier oil for insomnia and depression.”.If you choose to use this essential oil, the FDA does not monitor these products. .
